A Disruptive Call

As I was admiring the remnants of the erupted Mount Krakatoa from Kalianda, mainland South of Sumatra, and taking photos with my phone, an incoming call disrupted the atmosphere.

‘Doc, I am afraid flights will not be available until Monday morning. Because they fully booked all flights to Jakarta.’

Regained Clarity Despite Unpredictable

My mind was blank for a while, but quickly regained clarity. ‘Yes, I want to have a closer look at Mount Krakatoa.’ Putting a smile back on my face, showing island exploration opportunity on my plate this weekend because everything happens for a reason.

So, I quickly googled for the best route to get a glimpse of the Unpredictable Mount Krakatoa. However, Pulau Sebesi looks like the best option I’ve got. Now for the transportation, accommodation and tour guide, and I am done with the research; because I have been watching YouTube videos on Mount Krakatoa and Pulau Sebesi for sometime and now, it is all rushing into my brain feeding the adrenaline for the fright, flight and fight response.

Boat to Sebesi Island

While waited eagerly at the Canti Pier the next day for the one and only boat to Pulau Sebesi, I did a couple of quick TikTok videos for my documentations. The weather was pleasant as the high sunlit clouds drifted across a clear blue sky. Sea was very calm and inviting.

I was happily chatting with the locals on our journey to the Sebesi Island as I didn’t realize how time flies. As I reached the Sebesi Island, I swiftly changed into my swimwear and dashed onto another chartered boat to do my snorkeling and island hopping.

Everything was so peaceful, because it was a lovely swim, with the sun setting behind the mountain in a sea of liquid gold. Mount Sebesi, 844 meters above sea level, becomes an iconic figure of the island—famous for its hiking views and wild boars.

The Evening Creatures

During the evening, Mas Wowon took me on a motorcycle ride around the island to get a glimpse of the local village of almost 3000 people. Coconuts, bananas and cocoa are the main agricultural products here.

The best part of this island is the turtle watching at the pier. The Hawksbill Sea Turtle comes in groups, where the locals threw leftover unripe bananas onto the sea as they load the good quality bananas to the boat.

‘I never seen such tame turtles. This really amazed me.’ I told Mas Wowon.

‘You will be more amazed when you see the Mount Krakatoa tomorrow.’ He responded simultaneously.

The Krakatoa Kick Takeway

Yes. It was. I could see smokes coming out from the unpredictable active volcanic Krakatoa. The famous 1883 incident took the world by storm and turned it to some kind of celebrity. Shall I call it the King Krakatoa? It had had many eruptions since then. 2018 was at its highest awakening stage. Tonnes of lava spewed onto the sea, created waves of tsunami to other surrounding islands, including Sebesi Island. Not only the villages were displaced, the sea creatures’ colonies were dislocated.

I can only imagine how bad it was but I haven’t finished exploring Mount Krakatoa and the surroundings due to time constraint. So definitely I will be back to see the unpredictable Krakatoa!
