The President
President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). 7th and current president of Indonesia. The metal Ox for the Chinese zodiac, the Indonesian great leader, has been managing the political complexities of governing a country of over 270 million people, since 2014.
Through my 7 years in Indonesia, I could see Indonesia is progressing fast in its development and infrastructure, because his dream is to build a highway from the tip of Northern Sumatra all the way to the far west end of Java island.
Certainly what I hope Indonesians realize is that all these infrastructure projects sure create debts. However, they also create jobs for the people, improve their lives, and make Indonesia attractive for ex-pats and foreign businesses.
Continuous Challenges
Indonesia is never short of challenges—the solutions of which require sacrifices or could upset the powerful elites because that only a strong president could push. To clarify, these include addressing long-standing human rights problems, ending the persecution of minority groups and phasing out wasteful fuel subsidies.
Above all, look at how Jokowi reshuffled his cabinet, replacing the incompetent and corrupt politicians. Firstly, he doesn’t just sit in his office. Secondly, he drops by the various government agencies to check on them.
During his presidency, there was a significant drop in corruption issues and the city’s bureaucracy dramatic improvement. He prohibited his family members from bidding for city projects, therefore suppressing the risk of corruption.
A Humble Leader
His leadership skills are into people’s leadership style because he is humble and down to earth. And look at his lifestyle. Simple. Nothing luxurious. Just like the average Indonesian.
When the Indonesian great leader visits population centres, wearing simple, informal clothes.; he stopped at markets or walked along narrow alleys in the city to listen and witness firsthand about issues addressed by his people on the food price, housing difficulties, flooding, and transportation. With that says, He truly cares about his people, and you can see it in his actions.
With his to start online taxes, e-budgeting, e-purchasing and a cash management system, it has pushed Indonesia into transparency; because he is open to learning from other countries in areas where he knows Indonesia is lacking.
On 16th December 2020, he has offered free Covid-19 vaccination to his people and expected to take place in the coming months in 2021.
We Don’t Aim for Perfection but Excellency
These are just my opinion why I feel Jokowi is a great president for Indonesia. There are several shortcomings in his leadership. He is not perfect, but he tries to live up to his promise. He is the president of Indonesia’s needs at the moment.
