Estimated reading time: 6 minutes
What does the Easter Day celebration during covid and beyond holds for us? Bans on large gatherings and grocery shortages becoming increasingly common because of the coronavirus outbreak. Therefore, people have been celebrating Easter a little differently ever since 2020.
Many families have traditions for Easter, including a cooking feast, fun community activities like egg hunts, visiting the Easter bunny, or a special dinner out. However, this pandemic changed how we celebrate and look at Easter Day in a whole extra dimension.
But just because parties are smaller doesn’t mean they still can’t be unique. There are plenty of ways to feel festive and connected with loved ones, even from afar, online and offline.
15 tips and ideas to make your Easter memorable during coronavirus and beyond the lockdown for everyone, including the kids, to still enjoy it:
1. Prepare a dish together via video chat
Even if you’re not physically with that creative aunt who has all the best cooking secrets, you can still have their dish on your table. Set aside some time to make the recipe together virtually and ask for tips. If it’s something you grew up eating, you could become your family’s next expert on a beloved tradition!
After the excitement of the Easter meal, check-in with friends and family virtually. So set up a family Zoom call with the grandparents or distanced loved ones. If your Easter tradition usually includes church, find a live stream service to watch together at home. If you had already picked out the perfect Easter outfit, don’t let it go to waste! Get dressed up and then take pictures for the e-scrapbook on any of the social media platforms. I like to pin my photos as Pinterest Stories onto my favourite boards.
2. Scale down the number of dishes you are making
Your instinct may be to cook more than usual because hey, what else is there to do in quarantine? But that can get overwhelming fast. One main course, an appetiser or snack, two side dishes, and a nice dessert is enough to celebrate with little-added stress.
3. Make a list of backup recipes
There’s nothing worse than getting excited about a particular dish and not being able to make it. Putting together a list of some backup grocery list will cut down on spending too much time in the store.
4. Prepare some ingredients ahead of time
Often chop onions, garlic and other ingredients that don’t deteriorate in the fridge beforehand. We can measure out the Spices ahead of time. Therefore, you are not switching between the cutting board and the stove.
5. Have fun with desserts
Baking essentials, like flour, baking powder and vanilla extract, are pantry staples for many people. So if you’ve enough on hand, you can get creative. Experimenting with recipes like cookies is a great way to involve kids in action.
6. With main courses, be innovative
Right now, some stores may run low on ham, lamb and brisket, so plan your main course based on what’s available. For example, if you can only get a small ham, chop it up and use it in pasta to stretch out the portions. Be creative!
7. Look out for grocery store gems
Since people are stocking up on goods that last a long time or are more filling, many store shelves still have many stock items that pack in many flavours but aren’t quarantine staples. So please add some other spices to your cart.
8. Keep it simple
When cooking, think about sweet, salty, spicy, acidic and texture. By combining those elements, you’re going to have a good thing. Therefore, I advise you not to choose complicated recipes even if you think you have plenty of time.
9. When in doubt, order it!
If no one in your family really feels like cooking an enormous meal or you want to add something unique to the table, it’s totally alright to order it. Support local business and get delivery or takeout in a way that complies with social distancing.
10. Prioritise leftovers
Consider throwing your remaining ham into a split pea soup, or save and chicken bones for a hearty stock. If you are already cooking, consider making a double portion of a favourite family dish so people in the house can enjoy the leftovers for a few days.
11. Be flexible with your expectations
Taking care of yourself in a physical and mental capacity is even more important than food. So if planning a big mean isn’t your thing, then don’t feel obligated. Always have that positive mindset.
12. Easter Sunday brunch for kids
Start the day with a special breakfast or Easter brunch together as a family. Before the joyful chaos of the basket begins, serve up all the cute recipes for Easter breakfast that not only will your kids love, but they can help make, too.
13. Alternative Easter egg hunts for kids
Even if the neighbourhood or community cancel the Easter egg hunts, enjoy an egg hunt at your house. Fill plastic eggs with special treats or rewards. Extra screen time or picking the family movie are great alternatives to a midday sugar crash.
Or get the neighbours to join for a virtual Easter Egg Hunt. Paint, draw, or display eggs from the sidewalk. Spread positivity and enjoyment while practising safe social distancing. Get the word out by posting on your community Nextdoor or create a private Facebook group. - Peter Rabbit
- Hop
- Ice Age: The Great Egg-Scapade
