Ereveld Ancol or Dutch War Cemetery Ancol is one of the seven Dutch War Graves in Indonesia, which holds over 2000 honor graves here in Ancol, Jakarta. There are over 180,000 honor graves in the whole of Indonesia.

Many Dutch and the locals did not survive the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies. The Japanese troops took them to the Burma Railway and died there during 1943-44 as forced laborers. How many deaths do not count—the work must continue. Many bodies were mixed and became unidentified.

The soldiers took back some of the forced laborers to Jakarta (Batavia then) to execute them under a massive tree in the Ereveld Ancol location. The local named that tree, ‘Hemelboom’ in Dutch or ‘The Heaven Tree’.

Every war victim has a story, no matter how short and simple. With one of these critical historical spots, it ensures that we will always remember the victims and their stories. Importantly, lessons learned.

We learned to keep our hopes alive during this current illusive pandemic war we are facing now. Hope is abstract, but the repercussions of losing hope can be detrimental to any life.

Today we remember these heroes and heroines in the lovely Dutch War Cemetery Ancol, North of Jakarta.

‘A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.’—Joseph Campbell

Thank you for sharing! Found it very insightful.
“Hope is abstract but the repercussions of losing hope can be very detrimental to any life”, that is such powerful truth there.

May our heroes never be forgotten. ❤️
