Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

As a toddler, the walls on the house were my murals, and my parents were in horror, looking at the artwork I have created. I even asked for their opinions on them. From pencils to crayons to colour pencils to watercolours, it will appear on the walls. Every new masterpiece seemed almost every day unexpectedly.

‘OMG, Daniel. Not again!’ cried my mother.

Perhaps I love the sounds of a pounding crayon and the magic markings on an unsuspecting wall. Or it could be the enjoyment from the feel of the motion and surprising appearance of the line — the innate learning instincts of creative expressiveness.

Not only the walls, my dad’s non-fiction books and mum’s beloved fashion magazines were all my unfortunate victims. I think most of the parents during the 70s would agree with ‘spare the rod and spoil the child’ statement. Having many corporal punishments didn’t stop me from scribbling to drawing to painting until my secondary education.

At that point, I need to choose the path to pursue my next journey. Started focusing on where I wanted my life to go. It was a painful goodbye, but not long forgotten.

Today, although I am not in the art industry, I am giving my support and contribution to Malaysian artists. I am delighted to have Jamez from Lukis Lukis, who drew this priceless masterpiece.

The public needs to give room and resources for artists to thrive in an environment to experiment and grow. Therefore, I wish more people will accept their work, their stories, their truths, their ways of seeing the world.

Know what you want, and spend your time planning your work, schedule, and environment to mirror what you want in life. For me, it was always about drawing in another creative perspective way—so my choices and the path that I choose have got to align with my goals of being able to draw my future out with my WHYs in mind.

I love this post! Where I live there is a strong presence of Native American artwork that absolutely gorgeous. There are such deep stories and history tied to the art that runs far beyond the reservation boundaries.

Love this! And it cracks me up to read that you colored your parents’ walls as well as their books – accurate. my kids have all tried that at some point, or experimented with craft scissors, LOL. I definitely agree with supporting artists, even if you are not personally into drawing or creating.

My youngest is a wonderful artist and I hope he continues with his talent even when he is an adult. I’ve always loved art and visiting galleries.

many artists are struggling and striving for funding, I hope many private groups will be able to fund and help them.

I allowed myself to stop my creative painting, drawing. It was my escape. I have turned my creativity to cooking and slowly picking up a crayon here and there. Go back Daniel, maybe not on the walls, but on a pad. It is in you and you miss it, you can tell by your wonderful post.

Thank you for your kind words Giangi. Yes, is in me and now I have diverted my creativity into writing. Hopefully I can complete my manuscript by this year. Fingers crossed.

I remember being scolded for painting my bedroom wall when I was a child. One day, I heard my partner telling our child, “do not mess with the walls”! I never talk against my partner in front of my child because I don’t want to confuse them with the message. So, I waited 10 minutes, went upstairs, got a bunch of brushes and aqua colours and asked the said child to mess all they wanted. And to my partner to go buy wall paint cause they both will be busy redecorating the house at some point. Which they did. The child is still painting occasionally, mostly on canvases, and our house is their art gallery:) You wrote a beautiful parabole about envisaging the world around you as a canvas.

Your story is beautiful too. Always help small ones to express themselves and love in doing what they want. I am in the midst of writing my manuscript. Pieces of me are all over the place right now.

It must be wonderful to be able to draw! I have always admired artists since I cannot draw more than a stick figure:) Somehow though, my daughter has become quite a good artist and working on a graphic novel currently. I think it’s wonderful to keep that passion, even if not as a job but as a great way to release stress and have fun.
