Updated: April 01, 2022 – What I have learned during this Pandemic

The Unpredictable Lockdown
Exactly a year and a week ago today, the Management asked us to stay home, and the city was in lockdown soon after.
I do not know what does the future held.
‘It is how we respond to the challenge. That’s going to determine what is the ultimate endpoint going to be.’… I could still remember Anthony S. Fauci spoke in one of the US News Press Conference on YouTube as I headed back home.
Tragic Event
So how do I prepare for the future? That is really hard to do when an event happens so tragic, so earth-shattering, that this pandemic has put the future on hold. Frozen in time.
Because the only constant in life is change. So If we don’t adapt, we are going to be left behind.
A year ago today; I was:
- working from home.
- attending online webinars until I am overwhelmed.
- afraid to return to Malaysia because major airports have cancelled most International flights
- feeling very weird talking with virtual humans online.
- worried about how to communicate with my subordinates and customer effectively.
- clueless about how my daughter’s school system would be.
What’s Next?
I remember the most a year ago today, the fear. This is because pandemic forces us to change. We have to adapt. This is what I have learned during this pandemic.
I sat there in my chair in Jakarta and thought about it. ‘What am I going to do now?’
Everyone was saying we will be back to normal after Easter. By June, we shall enjoy the sunshine. When will we be back to normal? That will not will not be any normal. Normal is over. There’s pre-pandemic, and there’s post-pandemic. And now is endemic.
My family, my company and I have to adapt really fast..
3 ways I have learned to adapt:
1. Rebalance my own expectations–last year, the world made a change for me. I have to review and rebalance all my plans and goals.
2. Kick start a healthy lifestyle–I have lost 6 kg through exercising and diet.
3. Write a list of my personal fears–I did, and I overcame those fears. I grew my confidence from those fears by daily journaling (I have set myself 365 days of journaling with full accountability)
Be Confident Moving Forward
Confidence–Is not loud; Is not shouting, and is not crazy or is not insane. It is at the core. I need confidence in myself to move forward.
Lastly, confidence is silence. Security is loud.
The world is changing, and the world is moving forward. Are you?
‘Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future.’—John F Kennedy.

Great post. By already working from home, nothing changed for me except my son was home and doing virtual schooling. We both loved it, but it was short-lived, 4 months, and then back to school full time.
We are one of the states that have been open since the beginning and although our stats went up due to all the snowbirds from the North headed our way for winter, the up curve was short-lived and we are at a very low that not all the imposed mandated are almost all gone.
Change is inevitable and needed as if it was not there we would;d stagnate.

I think if we all look back over the last two years and see what we learned on how we adapted we will realize just how much we have grown from something so horrible. I have never internalized my thoughts as much as I have during this time, and I feel healthier for it.

The pandemic sure threw us all for a loop. We are slowly adapting to the new normal and continuing on living a more mindful life.

Some great observations there Daniel. COVID has certainly meant we all have to adapt and continue to develop our resilience. After two years it doesn’t look like we will be returning to pre covid life anytime soon, if at all.

I believe that when the dust settles we all will realized that we learned something interesting about ourselves and learn to adapt in various ways. I also think that societies on the whole might never return to the ore-lockdown status quo. Many people realized that they don’t want to commute do much or that they are more productive working from home. Many learned test they can eat healthier at home. Btw congrats on your swaps to a healthier lifestyle!

As much as I’m trying to remain optimistic, I can’t ignore the fact that people have become more aggressive and less caring. I see it in the supermarket when an entitled asshole decides to scold the cashier that has been there for him through the most challenging part of the pandemic. I see it in the masks carelessly discarded at the hospital entrance (masks that will amount to tons of waste ending in the oceans). Personally, I realised that I had to adapt because I am too small and insignificant to influence the big power’s game. It is just another experiment. I survived communism; I will survive this and whatever else the players decide to throw at us for their gain and entertainment. Life is finite. For all! Why not have fun while we’re here? I’ll make myself a cappuccino now. Small pleasures matter, too!:)

Yea. I kinda liked the “don’t have to go anywhere” side. I learned a lot about myself during pandemic. And about others too.
