Estimated reading time: 4 minutes
Besides leading the team, I always remind myself that being a team player is one of the essential elements of this challenging and complex business situation that we are facing now. There is no way in hell we could do all the tasks by ourselves. No matter how good you are. Being a superman is not my choice in life.
Therefore, we need a team to achieve maximum performance. Be it a leader or subordinates.
I believe that where ever we are in this world; you need to be a good team player so that the entire team will perform well, include yourself.
There are many leadership books or articles on becoming an influential leader, but rarely on how to improve to become a team player. Both are equally important.
Five tips on how to become a good team player:
1. Play your strength
Your strength is your capital and your contribution to the team. The better you are at a particular issue, it will definitely benefit the team, because this will lead to better performance in the entire team.
Identify your own strength and share with them what you can do best. For sure, in your team, the team players will have various forces. The team member will readily accept identified strengths.
2. Be honest about your weakness
Everyone is not perfect. Therefore, it is the main reason you want to join a team. You contribute to your strengths. By interacting with the team players, you improve on your weakness, and you learn from them. When you have mastered everything in that field, you will definitely feel bored and look for more significant challenges or a new job.
Please be honest with the team that you contribute your strength and have your own weakness that you want to learn from them.
3. Communicate clearly
You need to be communicative and transparent to the team. Honest and open discussion, i.e. What you can do when you face challenges? How can you contribute to the team? What help do you expect from the rest?
4. Clarify role and responsibility
We instead do things ourself because it is faster. However, maybe it is out of our responsibility. We need to be transparent with our role and responsibility. Work within the scope.
If there are any problem, the team member faces, ask them why and how we could help them.
5. Celebrate together even one small wins
Always remember that in the end, is the result that shared by the team member. Never treat it as if it is your own individual performance. Never take credit for your ownself. And never wait till the end of the destination to celebrate.
Have some break in between and celebrate small wins because these quick win celebrations will help to motivate the team. With that, the entire team will take part and contribute towards achieving that aim.
I hope that the above tips help us to become a better team player.
Happy Trying!

My grandmother taught me to never look down on the people who work for you, if there were not there you will not be where you are. I have used that all my life and I have been self-employed for close to 28 years. We had a manufacturing plant with over 20 people and when we changed the direction of the business I found them jobs and negotiate their salaries for them. Crazy how that may sound, the majority still hold those jobs and we are still friends.
Your # 5 is a must in my book.
